Winter Wellness Tips
Dr. Kalyan Bhowmick, MBBS, DBMS, M.D. (GEN MED), Consultant and General Physician, shares practical advice for staying healthy and safe during winter.Strengthening Immunity
Immunity builds gradually through a healthy lifestyle. Focus on a balanced nutrient-rich diet, proper hydration, and regular exercise. Adequate sleep and social connections also boost psychological well-being and, in turn, immunity. Vaccines like the flu and pneumonia shots are highly recommended to protect against seasonal infections.
Keeping Homes Safe and Warm
To stay warm, maximise exposure to sunlight during the day and close windows and vents before evening falls. Use room heaters or heated mattresses when it is extremely cold. Avoid dark window coverings to allow natural heating.
Dietary Adjustments for Energy
A winter diet should be wholesome, with plenty of vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. Protein-rich options, especially for non-vegetarians, help boost metabolism and keep the body warm. Hydration is vital, so drink enough water. Avoid alcohol, which can harm immunity and cause issues like hypoglycemia in diabetic patients. Supplements may be beneficial but should only be taken under medical advice.
Stay warm, stay safe!
