TRAVEL DIARY

A milky-fruity experience

Our member Ms N. Lahiri and her husband Mr A. Lahiri had visited their daughter at Ellington, in Connecticut, United States, during the summer of 2015. She shares her experience of the rustic town with a farming history, beautiful open spaces, and a wide variety of small local businesses.

We went to Oakridge Dairy farm, which is the largest in North Central Connecticut, for Jersey cow breeding. Every year they arrange a public fair for people to know about their farming and also to taste their ice creams and other milk products. A guide came by in a vehicle and offered to show us around the farm. He described the facilities provided to the cows. We were taken to see the corn fields, where corn was especially grown to feed the cows. The seats were made of straw, where the tourist’s sat and enjoyed the ambience. People could buy mementos like pencils or home décor items, which had signature Jersey cow pictures. From there, we went to visit the Johnny Appleseed farm. It allows you to pick from early August till the end of October. The apple trees were very short, which meant no ladders were required for climbing since all the fruits were easy to reach. The farm allowed us to pick as many apples as we could, but we had to buy a bucket while going back. Next, we visited the strawberry farm which also followed the same rule as the apple farm. We enjoyed visiting all these places, and especially loved the ice creams and the other dairy products at Oakridge Dairy farm. It was really a milky-fruity experience.
