Exploring Gerontology:

Promoting Healthy Ageing

On the occasion of International Older Persons Day, a panel discussion was hosted by Support Elders, related to bone health, nutrition for seniors, hearing and balance issues. The panel consisted of experts from various medical disciplines, each contributing various insights to the discussion.

Dr Anupam Biswas, renowned ENT Surgeon based in South Kolkata, addressed issues related to hearing problems and balance issues. He emphasized the importance of regular hearing check-ups and discussed solutions for balance related concerns in the elderly. Hearing loss and balance disorders which are common problems in the elderly, interfere with their social interaction. He spoke about the inner ear problems and the inflammation of the labyrinth causing vertigo and imbalance.

Dr Chandan Saha, specialist in Medicine and Haematology, based in Cambridge, UK discussed about the importance of bone health and how to address challenges such as osteoporosis. He discussed about joint issues like arthritis and how they can be managed to improve mobility and reduce pain in the elderly. He talked about concerns related to cancer of the blood and bone marrow, and common issues such as anaemia.

Dr Kaninika Basu, Clinical Academic based in Cambridge, UK, addressed the critical role of proper nutrition in healthy ageing and the need for a balanced diet, rich in essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Dr Basu, stressed that nutrition plays a key role in preventing chronic diseases and maintaining cognitive function in older adults. She also discussed the current concepts surrounding anatomy, provided valuable insights into changes that occur in the ageing body of any individual. She explained how bones, muscles and organs undergo changes overtime, making the elderly susceptible to certain health issues and emphasized the need for tailored healthcare solutions. She also spoke about why this is important and how this can be implemented for a happy and healthy older age.
